Glass Flex

General synopsis at 12:00 UTC

The North Atlantic is showing more of a classic north-south split than we’ve seen lately, with a meanderless jetstream crossing around the latitude of Scotland and a westerly airstream from Cape Farewell to the British Isles. There is still a large high pressure west of Biscay and there is a complex area of low pressure in the north, with centres to the northwest and northeast of Iceland respectively. Local pressure gradients are moderate in the north and quite slack in the south.

Forecast

Over the next couple of days the western centre of that complex low will swing eastwards and deepen, becoming quite a powerful system in the northern North Sea by Saturday, before disappearing off into Scandinavia on Sunday. A small ridge of high pressure develops to the west of Ireland on Saturday and moves eastwards over the southwest of the British Isles by Sunday, while the main centre of high pressure stays more or less stationary northwest of the Azores. Local pressure gradients become strong for a while in the north and stay fairly weak in the south.

South Coast of England

Friday:

Mostly very small or flat, apart from some poor-quality swell at extreme westerly exposures; moderate westerly winds

Saturday:

Winds increase to strong west-southwest and then veer west-northwest, generating some rideable surf with wave heights up to four feet

Sunday:

Wave heights quickly drop to practically nothing as winds veer northerly and decrease to light or moderate

Northern France and Channel Islands

Friday:

Some very small long-period swell with wave heights around two feet, spoilt by moderate westerly winds

Saturday:

Things become choppy as winds increase to strong westerlies; the long-period swell also increases but conditions are very poor

Sunday:

Winds veer to moderate northerlies and any long-period swell decreases, making for small, mixed-up surf

East coast of England and Scotland

Friday:

Some small northerly swell at the most exposed spots; wave heights maybe up to three feet if you’re lucky, with moderate becoming fresh southwest winds

Saturday:

Wave heights drop to almost nothing, with strong, perhaps gale-force westerly winds

Sunday:

A large north swell arrives, pushing wave heights up to six feet and beyond at exposed spots, with strong northwest winds

North Coast of Scotland

Friday:

Reasonable-quality west-northwest swell with wave heights up to eight feet or so at exposed spots and fresh southwest winds

Saturday:

A very large northwest swell arrives, accompanied by gale or severe-gale northwest winds; wave heights quickly reaching 15 feet or more

Sunday:

The swell direction swings into the north and continues to exceed 15 feet at many spots; winds are strong west or northwest

Western Scotland and northwest Ireland

Friday:

Poor-quality west swell with wave heights increasing to eight feet or so at exposed spots, with strong southwest winds

Saturday:

Winds veer west and then northwest, perhaps gale-force at first, and a huge swell arrives with wave heights well over 20 feet at exposed spots

Sunday:

The swell direction changes from west to northwest and winds go to light or moderate westerlies; wave heights still over 10 feet

Southwest Ireland

Friday:

Average-quality west swell with wave heights around six feet at exposed spots and fresh perhaps strong west-southwest winds

Saturday:

Winds veer northwest, fresh to strong, and a large northwest swell arrives pushing wave heights to eight feet or so at northwest-facing spots but failing to reach southwest-facing spots

Sunday:

Conditions clean up with light variable winds, and the northwest swell gradually loses its punch

Wales

Friday:

Small, poor-quality surf with wave heights around three feet and choppy and moderate to fresh westerly winds

Saturday:

Wave heights increase, maybe to four or five feet as winds increase to strong south-westerlies and then veer northwest

Sunday:

The surf drops off to almost nothing and winds drop to light northerlies

North Devon and Cornwall

Friday:

Some small long-period swell spoilt by moderate perhaps fresh westerly winds; wave heights around three or four feet

Saturday:

Any swell is swamped by windseas generated by strong westerly winds, veering northwest; wave heights about five feet and choppy

Sunday:

Conditions remain mostly poor as winds veer northerly and decrease to light or moderate, although some longer-period swell might appear later

Northwest France

Friday:

Some small, long-period west swell with wave heights around three feet and light northwest winds

Saturday:

More swell gradually filters through, with wave heights reaching five feet or so by the afternoon, but with moderate to fresh westerly winds

Sunday:

The swell increases further, exceeding six feet at exposed spots, with moderate northerly winds

Southwest France

Friday:

Small, long-period swell with wave heights around three feet and windless conditions

Saturday:

The swell continues almost the same, dropping very gradually, and winds remain practically non-existent

Sunday:

A new long-period swell arrives from the northwest, increasing wave heights to six feet or so, with light to moderate westerly winds

North coast of Spain – east of Gijón

Friday:

Small, long-period west swell mixed in with some leftover north swell; wave heights around three feet and light easterly winds

Saturday:

Wave heights drop very gradually but conditions remain good, with light variable winds

Sunday:

A new, long-period swell arrives from the northwest, with wave heights hitting five or six feet by the afternoon, and moderate westerly winds

North coast of Spain – west of Gijón

Friday:

Small, long-period west swell mixed with short-period northeast swell; wave heights about three or four feet and moderate northeast winds

Saturday:

Wave heights drop to three feet or maybe less, and winds are very light north-easterlies

Sunday:

A new long-period northwest swell arrives, pushing wave heights up to seven or eight feet by the afternoon, with light northerly winds

West coast of Galicia

Friday:

Small, long-period west swell with wave heights around three or four feet and moderate to fresh northeast winds

Saturday:

The swell drops a little and winds continue from the northeast, light to moderate

Sunday:

A new long-period northwest swell arrives, pushing wave heights up to six feet or more at northwest exposures; winds continue light or moderate north-easterlies

Portugal

Friday:

Small west swell mixed with some shorter-period north swell; wave heights around four feet and light easterly winds

Saturday:

The west swell continues and the north swell decreases; wave heights about three feet and light northeast winds

Sunday:

Small at first but a new long-period northwest swell arrives later; wave heights about five feet later and light northerly winds

Long-term prospects:

The upper airstream is forecast to retain more or less the same trajectory until mid-week next week, which means we might get some good surf. Then there is a chance that another large meander might develop, with its associated blocking anticyclone, or it might not. The forecasts seem to be saying that it could flip either way, so be prepared for anything.
